Today is the first official day of Spring in the U.S., my favorite season! I love watching the flowers bloom. The sun is out more often, which makes me happy and ready to tackle my day.

It's common for people to do a spring cleaning, which means cleaning out your closet, house, garage, or whatever else needs cleaning. So I thought, why not discuss a social media cleaning? Better yet, why not detox your accounts?

I don't mean disappearing from any digital platforms but being intentional about who you follow and how you spend your time and attention, especially if you are job searching or want to develop your career this year.

I'm about to make major changes to my LinkedIn profile.

I will revamp my profile, unfollow people, remove notifications, and reduce noise. I realized I've been spending too much time scrolling and less time engaged in discussions that matter to my career goals, so I wanted to help you do the same.

๐Ÿ’ก Feeling Distracted? How a Social Media Detox Can Refocus Your Career Goals

Ever find yourself opening LinkedIn for "just a quick check," only to realize 30 minutes have passed, and youโ€™re deep in posts that won't help your job search or career and a bunch of unrelated updates?

Social media can be a powerful career tool, but if itโ€™s becoming more of a distraction than a strategy, a reset may be exactly what you need.

A social media detox isnโ€™t about quitting platforms altogether; itโ€™s about using them intentionally. Otherwise, you'll be wasting precious time that can impact your job search and overall career goals. This might be why you feel stuck and unable to move forward.

Here are a few key takeaways:

๐ŸŸฃ Less scrolling, more strategy โ€“ Set clear boundaries for when and how you engage with social media so you stay productive without being digitally overwhelmed.

๐ŸŸฃ Eliminate digital distractions โ€“ Unfollow accounts that donโ€™t serve your career goals, turn off non-essential notifications, and be mindful of passive browsing.

๐ŸŸฃ Curate your feed with purpose โ€“ Follow industry leaders, hiring managers, and groups that provide real value instead of random noise.

๐ŸŸฃ Create a weekly job search plan โ€“ Structure your time on LinkedIn so each visit has a clear goal: networking, applying for jobs, or sharing industry insights.

Taking a break from social media clutter can help you focus, reduce stress, and give your job search (or career growth) the attention it deserves.

๐Ÿ”Ž Is Your ABOUT Section Saying Enough About You?

In case you missed last week's article, I discussed the LinkedIn About Section: How to Write a Compelling Summary that Keeps People Reading. Here's the truth about your LinkedIn summary: The About section helps you tell your story in ways that a resume never will. You have the ability to explain where you are now, what you did in the past, and where you want to go next.
